"There's no such thing as a perfect 50/50 split!"
「 The Review 」SynopsisAfter running into an issue with the music, members of the Film Club decided to change the final scene.
Story
In a movie, reshooting to correct mistakes can be such a hassle. The same thing can happen in anime... making new storyboards and drawing new scenes, especially when it's about to be finalized, can be a nightmare for animators and everyone else involved. This episode reflected that scenario quite well.
Regarding their short, I recommend watching it twice to fully grasp its message. I had goosebumps the second time around.
By the end of the ending credits, this finale doesn't have an artwork of the three, but an animation of Midori just running continuously. I think it symbolizes what she said at the end... "There's still a lot of room for improvement," so she won't stop, and continue to grow.
CharactersAfter 12 episodes, here's what I noticed on our main characters...
Tsubame has been equally seen as an animator and model at the same time, Kanamori has become spunkier, and Midori, while still not a people-person, has broadened her mind more as a director.
And here were the supporting characters you might have missed in this episode:
Members of the Student Council...
Doumeki...
Vice-Principal... (this one's pretty obvious, but some may wonder who this was)
and of course, Mr. Fujimoto:
Here's also a shot of him while our animators were working on new scenes: (He's the one inside the car.)
The Robot Club also had an exhibit in Comet A, while members of the Art Club was seen watching their film.
So I guess most of the important characters were present in this finale, and that's really cool.
Writing / StoryboardingContinuing from episode 11, we already knew the conflict for this finale. And the part where Midori's solution wasn't shown to the audience was for me a clever idea. Not only it made us clueless but also excited about the new ending.
The most unforgettable scene will probably be Kanamori using an angle grinder to get through the door -- that was definitely a replay-worthy.
Artwork / Animation
I totally loved the abstract/uneven design for underground buildings. For me, it was filled with imagination, just like the mind of Asakusa.
And the zoom-out animation at the end was an emotional ride. It hit me the most when I saw their ship which was featured in the very first episode. All I can say was "That's where it all started."
Music / SoundThe sound effects were just right and the BGM in their film was perfect, it didn't sound dated.
PS:
1) The inspiration for Comet A was Comiket (Comic Market), which is held annually at Tokyo Big Sight.
2) The film shown in this episode wasn't complete, in the screenshot below, you can see the words: "see the finished version (with sound) online in the future!" meaning there's a longer version, with dialogues included. If you remembered, they hired voice actors for the film.
3) The ending animation was animated by the mangaka himself -- Sumito Owara.
