Synopsis
A man that's half-lizard wants to find out who's the person inside him. Was it his real identity, or the sorcerer who turned him into who he is now?
Here's a shot of the sorcerers' boss pictured in a funny attire, holding a mushroom.
Story
Well, to be honest, it's totally twisted, but in a good way. Both the beginning and ending scenes featured a lot of brutalities, but in-between the episode, there's a touch of comedy to balance with the intense atmosphere.
Characters
We were introduced to five important characters in this pilot episode.
Caiman - A pretty unique demi-human, at a glance you would think he has the personality of Sasuke, when in fact he's more like Naruto (well not really, but you'll get what I mean when you watch this).
(Trivia: The closest relative of an alligator is called a caiman.)
Nikaido - A reliable sidekick, she's a restaurant owner that has some slick street fighting abilities (reminds me of Kagura from
Gintama).
Fujita - A sorcerer who survived the wrath of Caiman and Nikaido. I really don't know what to feel about him. I mean are all sorcerers in this anime the 'bad guy?' He, Matsumura, and Ebisu don't seem to have a devilish aura. So, yeah, no judgment on this character for now.
En - Hisoka from
Hunter X Hunter has finally become the boss of some gang. Nah, just kidding, I mean he is more psycho than this leader of sorcerers in this anime. Character-design wise, I'm eager to know if this guy's wearing a mask or his mouth was really distorted.
Ebisu - She has the shortest screentime of all the characters listed here, so nothing much to say, but her aura is oddly similar to a young Hinata.
Writing / Storyboarding
The first episode was filled with different genres and emotions. Clearly, the writers' creativity level was on at maximum level when they wrote the script for this.
Artwork / Animation
Oh, splendid. I love how detailed the background arts were, especially in the steam city.
For the animation, there were some cool 'camera-works,' mainly in the fight scenes. They were short, but it's filled with awesome shots, so it's totally fine.
Music / Sound
The opening was a rock song blended with Indian-esque backup vocals, while the ending was techno, which for me both worked well for a warped anime like this. The two tracks were performed by the music unit
(K)NoW_NAME.
The anime also offered us various background music, which suits every scene.
PS: Dorohedoro means "Mud to Mud" (Doro he doro) or "Mud [and] Sludge" (Doro hedoro) From Mud to Sludge. (Sources: reddit and tvtropes)
